Georgia Cookie Maps
During social studies we studied Georgia's land, plants, and animals. As a culminating activity, we made maps of Georgia using sugar cookies, frosting, and lots of toppings!
First, we frosted the cookies and outlined Georgia. We divided it into the five regions that we studied: Mountains, Piedmont, Coastal Plain, Wetlands, and Atlantic Ocean. Then we used a variety of food items to represent the land, plants, and animals found. We used Hershey kisses for mountains, chocolate chips for hills, rice crispies for the plains, blue icing for rivers/oceans, goldfish for fish in the water areas, and green sprinkles for the grass. We labeled the capital (Atlanta) and each region. The children loved making their cookies, but the best part was consuming their final product!!!

Character Parade
The children read mystery books and wrote Mystery Character Book Reports. They all dressed up as their favorite character from the book, and we had to guess who they were based on their appearance and props. The kids loved it!
Roots of our Democracy
We have been busy learning about democracy and our government. We studied the branches and levels of government, where democracy started, and learned about the rights and responsibilities of citizens.
We also learned about the symbols of the United States, such as the Statue of Liberty, the Liberty Bell, the bald eagle, Uncle Sam, and the American flag.
